My
work with found objects from the Greek Islands (in particular, the
Cyclades) is based upon an interest in landscape and a sense of place.
Putting together works which are about a place and made with objects
from that place invites us to look beyond appearance.
Alongside
The
abandoned objects are collected from boatyards, beaches and derelict
buildings and assembled in a similar way to placing paint on canvas,
with the same consideration given to colour, shape, form and
surface. They now have a new function, temporarily arrested from their
decay and most still holding secrets of their history but offering some
clues to inform the finished work as they are lifted from
obscurity. Each object has a unique
surface and is the product of human endeavour, unknown hands and the
passing of time. Now appointed to a new purpose, they invite
examination and reflect changes which are mirrored in our own lives.
These
collages or assemblages have a narrow depth and are framed in boxes.
Abstract in concept, the fabric of
their construction draws them towards the real world, to the maritime
associations from which they came and yet leaves room for us to allow
the object to transcend the descriptive and take on a wider
significance.
